Naan Bread Pizza with caramelized onions is one of my favorites. If you want a quick dinner that’s faster than takeout, this caramelized onion naan bread pizza might become your new go-to. Topped with melted cheese and sweet, savory caramelized onions, the flavor is outstanding.
This is one of my favorite air fryer recipes for a homemade pizza, but it also works well in the oven. The tender naan, gooey cheese, and rich onions make a simple, satisfying meal.

When I first tried an air fryer naan pizza it was a Margherita version, and since then I’ve experimented with many toppings. The variations are endless and all are delicious. This caramelized onion naan pizza doesn’t need pizza sauce — it works as a white pizza, relying on the onions and cheeses for big flavor.
The convenience of using naan for flatbread pizza is a huge plus. Keep a bag of naan in the freezer and you’ll always have the base for a quick personal pizza. Naan size is perfect for single servings and you can easily air fry several at once for guests, each with different toppings. A few ideas are included below.

How to Make Naan Pizza

Place a naan flatbread in the air fryer basket and cover it with an even layer of shredded mozzarella.

Top the cheese with a generous portion of caramelized onions, spreading them evenly.
How Long to Cook Naan Pizza
Set the air fryer to 370–375°F (190–190°C) and cook the naan pizza for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the edges are golden brown. I usually skip preheating and assemble the pizza while the air fryer heats.
Tip: Air frying makes these naan pizzas quick and crisp in under 10 minutes.

How to Make Caramelized Onions
You can make good caramelized onions in 20 to 30 minutes. I often prepare a batch ahead of time and keep them refrigerated — they’re great on sandwiches, burgers, and pizzas.
Slice onions into roughly 1/4-inch wedges and add them to a large nonstick skillet. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil and about 3/4 teaspoon salt. Heat the skillet over medium-high, add 3/4 cup water, and cover. When the onions begin to steam, cook covered for 10 minutes until the water evaporates.
Remove the lid and press the onions into a single layer on the bottom and sides of the pan to maximize contact. Let them brown for 30 seconds, then stir and repeat, pressing and allowing short browning intervals. Continue this process every 30 seconds to 1 minute until the onions are deep golden brown — roughly 20 to 30 minutes total.
Toward the end, mix a pinch of baking soda with a little water (a teaspoon or two) and add it to the pan; this helps the onions brown more quickly. Cook until any added water evaporates and the onions are glossy and richly browned.
Easy Pizza Sauce
If you prefer pizza sauce, feel free to add it. For this caramelized onion pizza I usually skip sauce, but here’s a quick no-cook option that keeps in the fridge for 3–4 days:
1 can tomato sauce, 1 clove minced garlic, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 1/4 tsp dried oregano, 1 tsp olive oil, and a pinch of sugar. Stir and use as needed.
Kitchen Essentials and Equipment
Basic equipment for this recipe includes an air fryer or oven, a nonstick skillet for onions, and a sheet pan if baking in the oven. Naan is an easy pantry staple for quick flatbread pizzas.
Storage for Naan Pizza
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer or oven to restore crispness.
Top tip
If you want an extra-crispy crust, air fry the plain naan at 370°F for 1–2 minutes before adding toppings, then assemble and finish cooking.
