Making French fries from scratch has never been easier. These Air Fryer French Fries use just three ingredients and come out crispy every time.

Why I Love These Air Fryer French Fries
- Easy cleanup. The air fryer delivers the taste of homemade fries without the mess of deep frying.
- Perfect side. These fries pair well with nearly any meal and are ideal for busy weeknights.
- Only 3 ingredients. Potatoes, a little oil, and salt are all you need for a great batch.

Ingredient Notes
- Potatoes: Russets give the classic fry texture and a crisp exterior. Yukon Golds work if you prefer a creamier center.
- Oil: Olive oil works well, but avocado, vegetable, or canola oil are all good alternatives.
- Seasonings: Salt and pepper are simple and delicious—add garlic powder, paprika, or your favorite blend if you want more flavor.

How to Make French Fries in the Air Fryer
Step 1: Clean and cut the potatoes
Scrub potatoes with a brush or cloth, then slice into even 1/4-inch sticks. Leaving the skin on helps the fries crisp up and adds texture.
Tip: Cut the fries as evenly as possible so they cook at the same rate. A fry cutter can save time and give consistent pieces.

Step 2: Soak in an ice bath
Place the cut potatoes in a large bowl of ice water for 30 minutes. This step removes surface starch and helps the fries become crispier when cooked.

Step 3: Dry and cook the potatoes
- Drain and thoroughly dry the potatoes with paper towels. Removing all surface water helps the oil and seasonings adhere and promotes crisping.
- Toss the dried fries in a bowl with 2–3 tablespoons of oil and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
- Arrange the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook at 375°F (190°C) for 16–22 minutes, shaking or turning them halfway through. Cook until they reach your preferred crispness; timing varies with fry thickness and air fryer model.
Tip: Avoid overcrowding the basket. Fries need space for hot air to circulate—cook in batches if necessary to keep them crispy.

Step 4: Season and enjoy
- Remove the fries from the air fryer and season with additional salt, pepper, or your favorite seasoning blend.
- Serve immediately with your preferred dipping sauce.

Tips & Variations
- Crinkle cut: Use a crinkle cutter for a different texture.
- Flavor variations: Try garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, lemon pepper, cajun seasoning, or finish with grated Parmesan or cheddar.
- Flip or shake halfway: For basket-style fryers, shake during cooking. For tray-style units, turn fries with tongs or a fork, taking care with hot pieces.
- Dry potatoes well: The drier the surface, the crispier the fries will be in the air fryer.
Storage & Freezing
- Storage: Fries are best fresh but can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheated for 3–5 minutes in the air fryer.
- Freezing: Freezing these homemade fries is not recommended.
