Over the past few months I have answered several Q&A sessions on Instagram and kept seeing the same question: “How should food make you feel?”

How Should Food Make Me Feel?

  • For nearly the first twenty years of my life, I often felt tired and sluggish after eating. Most of the time I wanted to nap immediately. I was frequently irritable throughout the day. That began to change when I shifted to a diet focused on real, whole ingredients; over time I started feeling energized after meals.
  • It’s important to note that food sensitivities and reactions don’t always show up as digestive symptoms. For me, certain foods affected me mentally more than physically. For years I noticed increased irritability after eating specific items, especially beans. I also experienced anxiety and itching at times, even without clear stomach problems.
  • Keeping a food and symptom journal made a big difference in identifying which foods help me feel my best. Track what you eat and how you feel afterward, including mood, energy levels, and any physical symptoms. Food impacts the whole body, not just the gut.
  • In short: food should make you feel energized and alive, not drained and fatigued.
